Our 2021 Annual Report Is Out!!!

The Youth Café is proud to share the eighth Impact Report produced based on the Social Return on Investment methodology. The average Social Return on Investment ratio for The Youth Café is 1:12, meaning that an investment of $1 delivers $12 value in terms of positive social impact. The present report outlines the main activities and projects carried out by The Youth Café from January to December 2021. The activities were developed and implemented in compliance with The Youth Cafés Strategic Plan approved for 2021-2023, its Theory of Change, and The 2017 Kenyan Youth Manifesto. +140 activities were chosen for evaluation during the reporting period to represent the diversity of The Youth Café programming. They were selected to represent all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 22 countries in Africa.

Kenya's first event, only for the youth, is happening tentatively on the 14th of April 2022. The Kenya Youth Manifesto Youth Jury is a new project organized and run by young people. It’s not a criminal jury, as there are no lawyers or judges.

The Kenya Youth Manifesto 2022 Technical Working Group Workshop.

Following the National and regional summits/consultation in a bid to develop the Kenya Youth Manifesto 2022, International Republican Institute, The Youth Café, Voluntary Service Overseas and partners sought passionate, experienced, and motivated experts to be part of a Technical Working Group (TWG), to support the drafting and the writing process of the Kenya Youth Manifesto 2022. The Manifesto Technical Working Group kicked off its activities from the 21st to the 23rd of March through a workshop in Nairobi. This set the ball rolling for the manifesto development, drafting, writing, and synthesizing data gathered from the National Youth Summit, regional youth summits, and other secondary materials.

In conjunction with partners, the International Republican Institute and The Youth Café held regional consultations seeking grassroots-level input from youth who are not engaged in the political process to ensure that the priority issues are captured comprehensively. The Regional Youth Summits on Magnifying the Visibility of Youth Leaders were unique in-person events designed by young people for young people convened.

The Youth Café At The Coalition Webinar On Strengthening Public Accountability Through Public Audit.

The Open Governance Institute, on behalf of the Coalition of Participatory Governance, hosted a webinar to present an assessment report that looked at the audit performance of 11 select county governments (Executive & Assembly). The discussions focused on various types of queries and financial implications with a later panel discussion addressing key strengths & weaknesses of the Audit Reports and establishing loopholes in the accountability ecosystems.

The Youth Café In A Digital Rights And Digital Inclusion Workshop.

Paradigm Initiative presented a Short Film, FOCUS, which captured the state of digital rights and digital inclusion in Africa as reported in Londa, PIN’s signature annual report. The 2020 report covered 20 African reports, including Kenya. The event meeting was held at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel (Hurlingham Nairobi) on the 18th of March 2022 from 0900 Hrs to 1200 Hrs.

National Youth Summit For Developing A Youth Manifesto 2022 | Magnifying The Visibility Of Youth Leaders.

The Youth Summit on Magnifying the Visibility of Youth Leaders was a unique in-person event designed by young people for young people. The summit was convened by the International Republican Institute and The Youth Café and organized with strategic partners, including 254 Youth Policy Café, The Global Development Incubator, and The Global Opportunity Youth Network support. The summit convened 40 youth, including youth political aspirants and civil society representatives with diverse sectoral knowledge on policy issues and priorities for the Kenyan youth. The three-day summit called on young people from all over Kenya to discuss the needs of youth that will integrate into the Kenya Youth Manifesto 2022.

Collaborative Futures Workshop | How New Technologies Can Support Social Justice Organizations In East Africa.

The Youth Café was invited for a 3-day Collaborative Futures Workshop, which is a hybrid hackathon and fellowship designed to help you, and fellow social justice organizations and leaders envision ways that emerging creative technology can expand your impact, understand how new technologies will shape your work and how we can change these technologies, and learn how to act on this knowledge in partnership with East Africa's boldest creatives and technologists using a Do It Yourself (DIY) ethos and active collaboration.

The Youth Café At The Voluntary National Review-Voluntary Local Review Workshop.

Voluntary National Review is a strategy based on the 2030 Agenda: Member states to "conduct regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national and sub-national levels, which are country-led and country-driven. Like the 2030 Agenda of participation, The Youth Café strives for global connection, has reached over 72 countries, and is a local and national rope for achieving goals. The Youth Cafés principles are a call to action for governments, civil societies, private and public sectors, bi- and multilateral, and knowledge institutions. To invest in mutual prospects and work in partnership for sustainable development.

The High-Level Global Conference On Youth-Inclusive Peace process | The Youth Café.

The High-Level Global Conference on Youth-Inclusive Peace Process was held virtually on 20-21 January 2022, co-hosted by Qatar, Finland, and Colombia, and co-organized with civil society and UN partners. It began with a Youth Pre-Event on 19 January 2022, leading up to the Global Conference on 20-21 January 2022. The high-level conference aimed to secure national commitments to advance the country-level operationalization of the Youth Peace Security agenda and strengthen political will and commitment to including youth in peace processes. Interactive and action-oriented discussions convened across five themes building on the Youth Peace Security agenda between Heads of State and other High-Level Government representatives, young peacebuilders, and representatives of intergovernmental organizations, CSOs, academia, and donors.

How Does The Youth Café Promote Critical Citizenship Among Youth In Kenya?

The Youth Café trains the youth on civic education driven by result-oriented, evidence-based performance, which informs Our Theory of Change: A Pathway for Action, Sustainability, Results, Learning, and Adoption. These changes include institutional changes, service systems, community norms, partnerships, public will, policies, regulations, service practices, business practices, and issue visibility.

Unlocking Finance To Build Forward Better From The Covid-19 Crisis & Accelerate Delivery Of Sustainable Development.

The African government's economic crisis over the Covid-19 Pandemic equals (1 to 7)% of their GDP, contributed by African Governments deploying fewer funds and measures for high-quality recovery. At The Youth Café, we believe that there is a need for financial education. This will increase unlocking finance to build forward better from COVID-19 and accelerate delivery on Sustainable Development as intended: To identify effective measures to address the overarching challenge of mobilizing adequate and sustainable finance to invest in sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 crisis and accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063. To identify and articulate the financing needs and provide high-level insights on opportunities to mobilize finance, focusing on the role of the Liquidity and Sustainability Facility designed and launched by ECA and partners.

OFFICE VISITS

At The Youth Café offices, we were privileged with guests; Rubina James, the Director, and Evelyn Namvua, the Communications and Engagement Specialist from Africa Biodiversity Collaborative Group, a consortium of seven major US-based international conservation organizations with extensive field programs in Africa. Reinhard Nyandire, Africa Programme Director of Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF), also joined virtually. We will be collaborating to create conservation podcasts because environmental conservation should be an African culture.

At The Youth Cafés offices, we were privileged to have guests @Denis Pato, the co-founder, and executive director of @vijanacorps, a Ugandan-based youth-led, youth-focused organization working to realize an enlightened, empowered, and productive youth through digital and media literacy, livelihood, and entrepreneurs. Their working areas consecutively collide with The Youth Cafés' thematic areas. Consequently, we will have further discussions on collaborative areas of work.
