The Youth Café (Kenya) in partnership with University of Sussex (UK) is looking for young people between the ages of 18- 25 in Kenya to help design online youth mental health support.

In this study we want to explore people’s views of youth mental health provision in your community. We are also interested in finding ou about your use of online platforms. This study is looking at ways to provide accessible mental health support to young people, particularly those affected by COVID-19, and we are looking for young people living in Kenya aged 18-25 to share their views and help the design process.

Who is conducting the study?

The project is led by Emma Newport, a lecturer at the University of Sussex and local staff at The Youth Café, a pan-African NGO.

What will participating in this project involve?

If you agree to participate in the project, you will be invited to take part in an anonymous questionnaire, giving your views on mental health in your community. A random selection of participants from the survey will be asked to join a focus group. If chosen, researchers will ask you questions about your views on youth mental health support in your community and on your use of online platforms. The focus groups will use video or phone conferencing.

What is your understanding of mental health and well-being?

Young people have been affected by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, with serious consequences for mental health and well-being and little psychosocial care.

Ever found yourself in a dark corner, alone, feeling no one understands you? You get the perception that you have nowhere to run to. No way to hide your misery that burns inside of you. That loneliness and life of solitude. But...what if you could talk to someone who can listen without judging.

Look no further, we have great activities lined up for you. As part of the Mental Health Project, The Youth Cafe in partnership with University of Sussex (UK) plans on hosting a series of podcast episodes. In these episodes, we will get to share people’s experiences and their understanding of mental health and wellbeing, document the project staff’s journey and participants’ experiences throughout this project, voice out the psychosocial intervention model we will use and get to involve experts and listeners to get to participate in the sessions.
