Location: Nairobi, Kenya (with flexibility for remote work and some in-country travel)
Contract Type: Consultancy
Level of Effort: Part-time, estimated 15-20 working days per month based on content calendar and campaign timelines
Duration: 12 Months (June 2025 – May 2026)
Reports to: Project Lead, The Youth Café
Collaborates with: Education Outreach Team, Seefar (Lead Partner), and Influencer Network

1. Background

The Youth Café, a leading youth-focused organization in Kenya, is a co-applicant in the EU-funded MMD III project led by Seefar. The project seeks to strengthen resistance to irregular migration and trafficking among youth by delivering scalable social media campaigns and education outreach across Nigeria, Kenya, Morocco, and Senegal.

Social media is a key vehicle for reaching and influencing the behavior and attitudes of over 50 million youth. The Social Media & Communications Expert will play a vital role in designing and delivering compelling, youth-targeted digital content and communication strategies for the project’s online presence in Kenya.

2. Purpose of the Assignment

The consultant will lead the design, planning, deployment, and monitoring of digital and social media content aimed at youth in Kenya. This role encompasses content creation, including the recording and editing of podcasts and videos, as well as taking and editing photos. The consultant will leverage tools like Canva and related software for content creation, coordinate with influencers, and monitor campaigns across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, ensuring alignment with the overall messaging strategy led by Seefar.

3. Key Responsibilities

A. Content Creation & Production

  • Create and produce engaging digital content across various formats, including graphics, short videos, and compelling captions, tailored for youth audiences.

  • Record, edit, and produce high-quality podcast episodes focusing on migration-related cases or relevant topics.

  • Capture and edit professional photos for effective use across all social media platforms.

  • Utilize and maintain proficiency in content creation software such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Photoshop, Premiere Pro), CapCut, and similar tools to develop visually appealing materials.

  • Translate complex topics into accessible, engaging & youth-friendly digital content.

B. Social Media Campaign Management & Engagement

  • Develop and implement a country-specific social media strategy aligned with the project’s objectives and overall communication goals.

  • Manage all project campaign pages across relevant social media platforms, including scheduling posts, actively engaging users, and responding to comments and inquiries.

  • Coordinate effectively with local influencers to co-create and distribute migration-related content that resonates deeply with target youth audiences.

  • Support testing of content formats and messages through methodologies like A/B testing and pilot posts to optimize campaign performance.

  • Monitor audience reactions, metrics, and engagement levels across all platforms to inform adaptive strategies and continuous improvement.

  • Ensure that all communication is ethical, responsible, culturally sensitive, and adheres to strict child protection and safeguarding standards.

C. Reporting & Data Integration

  • Support the integration of social media data, insights, and analytics into broader project reporting and evaluation frameworks.

  • Contribute to the development of monthly performance reports, including key metrics on reach, engagement, and audience feedback.

D. Collaboration & Coordination

  • Collaborate closely with the Project Lead, Programs Coordinator, and the Project Team to ensure seamless integration of social media activities with overall project goals and activities.

E. General Duties

  • Any other responsibilities/roles as may be assigned to you to support the successful execution of the project.

4. Deliverables

  • Monthly content calendars and drafts for review and approval.

  • Management of at least one Facebook page targeting Kenyan youth, with 4+ posts weekly.

  • At least 80 curated social media content pieces developed.

  • 24 podcast episodes recorded and edited.

  • 12 videos produced and edited.

  • 12 events photos taken and edited.

  • At least 20 influencer-supported posts over 12 months.

  • Monthly performance reports including reach, engagement, and audience feedback.

  • Contribution to quarterly donor reports on communications activities.

  • 2 developed learning reports and SOP documents on social media best practices.

  • A final consultancy report detailing insights and recommendations for future campaigns.

5. Duration and Payment Terms

  • Duration: 12 months, from June 2025 to May 2026

  • Compensation: Fixed consultancy fee on a monthly basis of €400 (totaling €4,800) subject to the 5% withholding tax.

  • Location: Based in Nairobi, with possible travel within Kenya

  • Payment Schedule: Monthly, upon submission of deliverables and timesheets

6. Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media, Marketing, or a related field.

  • At least 3 years of professional experience managing social media for development or youth-focused projects.

  • Demonstrated strong command of social media platforms and trends for youth engagement.

  • Proven ability to create youth-relevant content on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

  • Experience working with or managing digital influencers.

  • Proven ability to record and edit high-quality podcasts and videos, and take and edit professional photos.

  • Proficiency in using content creation software such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Photoshop, Premiere Pro), CapCut, or similar tools.

  • Understanding of migration, youth development, or anti-trafficking narratives is desirable.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Kiswahili.

  • Familiarity with audience analytics tools (Meta Insights, Hootsuite, etc.).
