KNCHR Calls for Action on African Anti-Corruption Day 2025

The Youth Cafe (TYC) joins other national, regional, and international bodies in commemorating the African Anti-Corruption Day. This is a day set aside by the African Union to commemorate the adoption of the AU Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption, in which Kenya is a signatory. The Youth Cafe resonates with this year’s theme, which is “Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption.” from the premise that human rights are the fundamental standards of dignity to which every individual is entitled.

TYC recognizes that corruption is closely interlinked with human rights and fundamental freedoms, which directly affect human dignity. Corruption is an offense against humanity and constitutes a serious violation of individual rights and freedoms. Corruption is the biggest impediment to the realization of human rights as it denies basic services to the people and results in discriminatory practices that exacerbate poverty and inequality.

Corruption weakens democracy, the rule of law, and access to justice. Corruption victims in most cases are the vulnerable in our society, particularly women, children, persons with disabilities, minority and marginalised groups, and older persons.

As we commemorate this African Anti-Corruption Day, the Commission makes the following call to action;

  •  The State should adopt a Human Rights-Based Approach in combating corruption and economic crimes by placing the victims at the center;

  • The State should enhance its legal environment by fast-tracking the ongoing legislative and policy reforms in combating Corruption and economic offences, including the finalization, enactment, and implementation of the Conflict of Interest Bill 2023 and its subsequent regulations.

  • County Governments should prioritize the development and implementation of anti- corruption laws and policies.
