The Youth Cafe And Safe MIT At The 2026 International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) In New York

The global community is descending upon New York from May 5–8, 2026, for the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), the primary intergovernmental platform to discuss progress on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM).

The Youth Cafe (TYC) and the Safe Migration Information and Training (Safe MIT) project are proud to announce our participation in this landmark event. Representing our collective efforts on the ground will be Mumbiko King'ori, the Safe MIT Coordinator for Kenya and Uganda.

A Strategic Seat at the Table: Briefing with the Kenya Mission

Demonstrating our commitment to national and global migration governance, Mumbiko will kick off the forum on Monday morning by joining the official Kenyan Delegation. Alongside officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Coordination Mechanism on Migration (NCM) Secretariat, he will participate in a high-level briefing session with the Kenyan Ambassador in New York.

This meeting is particularly significant as Kenya currently holds a prominent global leadership role in this space. Kenya is serving as a co-facilitator to the GCM Progress Declaration negotiations, positioning the country as a key architect in shaping international migration policy.

A Regional Force for Safe Migration

Mumbiko King’ori attends the IMRF not only on behalf of The Youth Cafe but as a representative of the Seefar Consortium. He will be showcasing the extensive work Safe MIT has undertaken across four African countries to mitigate the risks of irregular migration.

The Safe MIT project is a critical initiative contracted by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) through the MMD Grant Facility, with generous funding from the European Union. Our mission has been clear: to provide young people with the agency and information they need to make informed decisions about their futures.

Spotlight on the Safe Migration Curriculum

A cornerstone of our presentation in New York will be the Safe Migration Curriculum. Designed specifically for adolescents aged 13 to 18 years old, this curriculum addresses the unique vulnerabilities of young people facing the pressures of irregular migration.

We are thrilled to share that this curriculum has been:

  • Piloted and Passed: Formally reviewed and adopted by respective governments in four African nations.

  • Impactful: Utilized to sensitize thousands of young people on the realities and dangers of irregular routes while highlighting legal pathways.

  • Collaborative: Developed through the combined expertise of The Youth Cafe and Seefar, ensuring it is both culturally relevant and pedagogically sound.

Our Agenda in New York

Mumbiko will be active throughout the forum, participating in the Main Plenary Sessions and various Side Events. His goal is to share the "on-the-ground" success stories of the Safe MIT project and demonstrate how regional consortiums can effectively partner with international bodies like the ICMPD and the EU to drive systemic change.

He will be presenting data and insights gathered from implementation in Kenya and Uganda, offering a blueprint for youth-centered migration interventions.
