The Youth Cafe Joins Kenya Climate Change Working Group | Youth And Climate Justice

The Youth Cafe has joined the Kenya Climate Change Working Group (KCCWG). The Kenya Climate Change Working Group is a network of civil society organizations and distinguished climate experts uniting voices on climate change adaptation and mitigation through evidence-based policy advocacy, capacity strengthening, and learning.

The Kenya Climate Change Working Group was formed in April 2009, as a result of the resolve of members of various civil society organizations and donor partners in Kenya to come together to form a united front in confronting the causes and effects of climate change in broad and specific terms in Kenya, Africa, and elsewhere where their contribution would be needed.

KCCWG creates a platform for members to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and offer training and workshop opportunities once in a while or on a limited basis that are dependent on a member's activeness (measured by the level of responsiveness to network invites, requests, contributions during engagements and communication, etc.).

The issues of concern include the continued livelihood threats posed by climate change, the fact that Kenyan people are among the most vulnerable groups, and the need to unite in diversity to enhance advocacy, create synergies on their strengths, and strengthen climate response actions. The Youth Cafe, being a member of the KCCWG, will be part of the National Steering Committee (NSC) at the thematic group level.

The NSC is in charge of fundraising, reviewing and making appropriate recommendations on KCCWG activities, facilitating capacity enhancement as recommended by members, linking the KCCWG with the government and other relevant partners, and monitoring and evaluating all projects undertaken by the KCCWG, assisted by the secretariat, among others.

KCCWG, therefore, is a forum that brings together civil society organizations in Kenya and donor partners, government departments, and agencies working on climate change and climate justice; for the purpose of creating synergies, harmonizing and strengthening efforts in the design and implementation of activities that address climate change, and lobbying and advocating for favorable national policies in the promotion of climate justice.

The network is organized into 8 thematic units, which include; mitigation, technology transfer, adaptation, gender and capacity building, youth and marginalized groups, climate change science and negotiations, climate finance and transparency, and wildlife and tourism thematic groups.
