The event was convened by the partners of the “Youth Moving Beyond GDP” initiative, the Beyond Lab at UN Geneva, The Youth Cafe, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and Rethinking Economics International, in partnership with: the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the Governments of Germany, Spain, Zambia as well as Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC); the UN Youth Office; and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
The Kenya Leadership Integrity Forum (KLIF) has launched its strategic plan for 2023 – 2028. Dubbed the Kenya Integrity Plan (KIP) and unveiled yesterday at the Kenya International Conference Centre (KICC), it was initiated in 2023, and despite its late launch, the stakeholders have already been implementing it.
The Youth Cafe noted that significant police barricades were erected on major roads and entry points, severely disrupting the movement of people, particularly in Nairobi. Additional blockades were reported in Kiambu, Meru, Kisii, Nyeri, Nakuru and Embu. Many citizens were unable to report to work, despite the directive issued yesterday by the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Geoffrey Ruku, requiring all Government employees to report to work without fail.
The Youth Cafe observes that the death toll has now risen to thirty-eight (38) people as of 1800hrs today. At least one hundred and thirty (130) people are still nursing injuries at home and in various health facilities across the country. The Youth Cafe has been assisting the families of the deceased in conducting postmortems in collaboration with the Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), The Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) and other partners in the Civil Society.
In a landmark move to strengthen the country’s anti-corruption framework, President William Ruto has signed the long-awaited Conflict of Interest Bill into law at State House, Nairobi. The new legislation is expected to significantly curb the abuse of power and misuse of public resources by public officers.
The African Youth Cafe calls on the police and other security agencies to conduct themselves impartially, professionally and observe the Constitutional Standards and Principles of Human Rights as required of them by Article 244 of the Constitution. The police must isolate the criminal elements who may infiltrate peaceful demonstrations. The use of force by security officers should be a last resort and must be necessary and proportionate.
The Youth Cafe (TYC) joins other national, regional, and international bodies in commemorating the African Anti-Corruption Day. This is a day set aside by the African Union to commemorate the adoption of the AU Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption, in which Kenya is a signatory. The Youth Cafe resonates with this year’s theme, which is “Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption.” from the premise that human rights are the fundamental standards of dignity to which every individual is entitled.
