AFCON Youth Inclusion Initiative
Introduction
The Youth Café representatives held a productive introductory meeting with Mr. Nicholas Musonye, Chairman of the Pamoja Local Organizing Committee, to explore a formal partnership framework ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The meeting was held in a spirit of shared commitment to leveraging the continental tournament as a platform for broader social impact. Mr. Musonye warmly received our proposal and expressed strong alignment with the vision of using AFCON not only as a sporting spectacle but as a transformative event for African youth.
Both parties acknowledged that the tournament presents a rare and powerful opportunity to amplify youth voices, drive grassroots engagement, and create lasting legacies beyond the football pitch.
Exploring Opportunities for Youth Engagement
During the discussions, we outlined our organization’s mandate and the specific youth inclusion agenda we intend to bring to the partnership.
Key Areas of Focus
The key areas of focus included:
Creating dedicated youth engagement programs tied to match days and tournament events.
Establishing mentorship and skills-development activations at fan zones and community venues.
Ensuring meaningful representation of young people across volunteer, creative, and ambassadorial roles within the AFCON ecosystem.
Mr. Musonye, drawing on his extensive experience in continental football administration, offered valuable insights into the operational framework of the Local Organizing Committee and identified concrete entry points through which our programs could be formally integrated into the event’s community outreach agenda.
Commitment to Structured Collaboration
Both parties agreed on the importance of structured collaboration, and Mr. Musonye expressed willingness to champion our inclusion agenda within the Pamoja LOC structures.
We discussed the formation of a joint working group that will meet regularly to align programming timelines, secure necessary approvals, and co-develop youth-focused activations with measurable outcomes.
It was also agreed that our teams would exchange technical documents and concept notes of the meeting, laying the groundwork for a memorandum of understanding to be finalized in the coming months.
Looking Ahead
The meeting concluded on an optimistic note, with both sides expressing confidence that the proposed partnership has strong potential to set a new standard for youth engagement at major African sporting events.
Mr. Musonye emphasized that the Pamoja LOC views youth inclusion not as a peripheral initiative but as central to the identity and legacy of this AFCON edition.
Our organization is committed to working collaboratively, transparently, and with urgency to ensure that the agreed framework translates into tangible opportunities for young Africans to participate in, benefit from, and take ownership of the tournament experience.
