Cyber Rights Campus Connect: Empowering Kenya’s Digital Generation — Next Stop, Daystar University

In today’s increasingly digital world, young Kenyans are more connected than ever — but also more vulnerable. From cyberbullying to non-consensual image sharing, digital spaces have become both a powerful tool for expression and a risky frontier for harm.

That’s why The Youth Cafe launched Cyber Rights Campus Connect — a bold, youth-led initiative designed to educate, empower, and equip university students with practical knowledge on Kenya’s Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act (CMCA) 2018.

What We’ve Done So Far

On 18th July 2025, our first campus stop took us to United States International University (USIU), where a big number of students joined our interactive live podcast session — with another 1,000+ participating online.

The discussions were timely and intense. Students asked questions. Experts broke down Sections 27 (cyberbullying and online harassment) and 37 (non-consensual sharing of intimate images) of the CMCA. We talked real-life experiences, legal remedies, and how young people can be both defenders and beneficiaries of safer digital ecosystems.

The energy was electric. The feedback was honest. And the youth policy recommendations we gathered are already shaping a compelling policy brief to be submitted to Parliament.

Why This Matters

Too many young people fall victim to digital abuse simply because they don’t know their rights or the laws meant to protect them. And worse — many unknowingly become perpetrators of online harm.

This project is about closing that gap. It’s about protecting dignity, amplifying youth voices, and making sure Kenya’s digital laws reflect the real experiences of its digital natives.
