Promoting Entrepreneurship Among African Youth

Acknowledging the importance of investing in and creating space and opportunities for young people for them to realize their full potential, The Youth Cafe has proposed several initiatives geared towards youth empowerment. The AU Agenda 2063 recognises the need to do this as a prerequisite for achieving the socio-economic transformation of Africa. This initiative is aimed at reaching millions of youth from across the continent with opportunities and interventions in key areas of employment, entrepreneurship, education and engagement.

The discussions during the AU-EU Summit were on 6 priority thematics: Business, Job Creation and Entrepreneurship; Education and Skills; Peace and Security; Governance and Political Inclusion; Climate and Environmental Preservation; and Culture, Sports and Arts, including 3 cross-cutting issues (gender equality, migration and digitalisation). The recommendations from the Youth Summit will provide inspiration and hopefully direction for the Africa-EU partnership in the years to come. The Youth Café fully supports the AU-EU Summit.

This publication is the second of two to explore the findings and insights from an online global consultation, held in July 2020, exploring young Africans’ use of digital technologies in different areas in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond. Identification And Evaluation Of Business Opportunities: The Experiences Of South African And Ugandan Youth Entrepreneurs

It is often believed that without opportunity, entrepreneurship would not exist. Identification and pursuit of opportunities are believed to be at the very heart of entrepreneurial success, which sets entrepreneurs apart from other members of society. However, according to the recent Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Report, only about one-third of South Africans were able to recognize entrepreneurial opportunities within their communities. In Uganda, the majority of the youth entrepreneurs are said to be engaged in low margin businesses that are only able to meet the day-to-day needs of the owners with very little differentiation amongst them.
