The latest unemployment statistics show a continued rise in the levels of youth unemployment with the expanded unemployment rate creeping up to 52% for youth aged 15 to 34 years (Statistics South Africa, 2019). The most significant contributor to this situation is the limited growth in the number of jobs that can match the number of new work seekers entering the labour market each year.
Our role is to bridge the gap between young people and the labour market. We work with both informal and formal sectors to raise the quantity and quality of career opportunities.
In April 2020, three advocacy organizations, The Youth Cafe, Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) and Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF), hosted a series of three teach-ins on organizing virtual meetings, centered around three kinds of skills to grow together. These were: 1) Planning meetings: accessibility & methodology; 2) Logistics: nuts & bolts of software; 3) Digital safety. This report fills a critical knowledge gap and offers funders, governments, the private sector and other key stakeholders data-based evidence to inform their engagement with African CSOs, both during and after the pandemic. It also provides CSOs with a tool to help strengthen solidarity and inform advocacy for greater recognition and support for the sector.

Not a single corner of the globe is free from pollution caused by microplastics, beaches and waterfronts are littered, islands of plastics float in the ocean, and people are taking notice. Yet, the global pandemic is causing a spike in the consumption of single use sanitary products, such as masks and gloves - along with an increase in less necessary single-use plastic bags and take-out containers.

On request from IRENA, the SDG7 Youth Constituency provided an input to the agency's report on the impact of COVID-19 on youth in the renewable energy sector. The submission is focused on impacts of the crisis, examples of youth action in the face of pandemic and policy recommendations for post-COVID recovery.
