With the global pandemic transforming education and shifting education online, a new collaboration has seen a number of global students come together to talk about their experiences of living through the pandemic. Lockdown Live, an online series that aimed to unite students remotely, brought together Sussex Writes, a community project which sends Sussex students into schools to work with pupils on creative projects and writing projects and The Youth Café – a pan-African NGO which has a mission to advance youth-led approaches on a number of global issues.
Youth engagement for global action is the main theme for International Youth Day 2020. The theme seeks to dissect how youths are engaged in various aspects locally, nationally and globally. The need to boost youth representation in multilateral and political institutes will also be looked upon. To provide a starting point for youth in Africa, The Youth Café has planned a series of activities prior to the date of celebration and has lined up creative launches on International Youth Day
The latest unemployment statistics show a continued rise in the levels of youth unemployment with the expanded unemployment rate creeping up to 52% for youth aged 15 to 34 years (Statistics South Africa, 2019). The most significant contributor to this situation is the limited growth in the number of jobs that can match the number of new work seekers entering the labour market each year.
Our role is to bridge the gap between young people and the labour market. We work with both informal and formal sectors to raise the quantity and quality of career opportunities.
In April 2020, three advocacy organizations, The Youth Cafe, Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) and Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF), hosted a series of three teach-ins on organizing virtual meetings, centered around three kinds of skills to grow together. These were: 1) Planning meetings: accessibility & methodology; 2) Logistics: nuts & bolts of software; 3) Digital safety. In this toolkit, we have included the tools discussed during the three teach-ins as well as other tools requested by the participants. We hope you’ll find it useful!
This report fills a critical knowledge gap and offers funders, governments, the private sector and other key stakeholders data-based evidence to inform their engagement with African CSOs, both during and after the pandemic. Yet, the global pandemic is causing a spike in the consumption of single use sanitary products, such as masks and gloves - along with an increase in less necessary single-use plastic bags and take-out containers.
