United Nations Conference on Trade and Development | Youth Forum Declaration

This Declaration contains the priorities and recommendations of youth who participated in the third meeting of the UNCTAD Youth Forum, held with remote participation from 16 to 18 September 2021, in the lead up to the fifteenth session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD XV). With over 300 participants from over 80 countries, the Forum provided a global view of the tools needed to achieve a sustainable recovery in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in terms of trade and development.

Youth participants selected five topics they deemed to be the most crucial to young people to address at this point in time, namely, inclusive social and economic development, new economies, climate action, inclusive and equitable learning and youth civic participation. Under each of these areas, suggestions and policy recommendations are included to be presented to member States at UNCTAD XV

Call To Action To Civil Society | The Future Of The Summit For Democracy Needs Youth

Democracy organizations co-leads of the Youth Democracy cohort (International IDEA, the European Partnership for Democracy, the European Democracy Youth Network and AfricTivistes) call on civil society organisations and other stakeholders around the world to promote youth political participation as a bedrock of the Summit for Democracy process for the future.

The call comes in the context of the second Summit for Democracy which takes place in Washington, Seoul, San Jose, The Hague, and Lusaka on the 29th and 30th of March 2023 at which countries will discuss the most pressing challenges facing democracy. The Summit for Democracy will mobilize leadership and commitments to expand support to democracy globally.

The open call is being organized by the REDSSA (Research for Ethical Data Science in sub-Saharan Africa) group, with the goal to identify stakeholder-driven ways to increase community engagement on data science in health research in Africa. The organizers are seeking creative ideas for how to raise awareness among communities that sensitive individual health and location information is being collected and shared as part of large, anonymized data sets for research.

National Youth Summit For Developing A Youth Manifesto 2022 | Magnifying The Visibility Of Youth Leaders.

The Youth Summit on Magnifying the Visibility of Youth Leaders was a unique in-person event designed by young people for young people. The summit was convened by the International Republican Institute and The Youth Café and organized with strategic partners, including 254 Youth Policy Café, The Global Development Incubator, and The Global Opportunity Youth Network support. The summit convened 40 youth, including youth political aspirants and civil society representatives with diverse sectoral knowledge on policy issues and priorities for the Kenyan youth. The three-day summit called on young people from all over Kenya to discuss the needs of youth that will integrate into the Kenya Youth Manifesto 2022.

The Youth Coordinating Committee for Elections having been launched with the obligation to enhance youth participation in the electoral process, it is imperative to enhance the capacity of this committee to be able to carry out its mandate as per the aspirations shared by the commission. The Y.C.C. draws its membership from youth focused and youth-serving organizations across the country and will use these existing structures to conduct voter education and mobilization of young people to register as voters ahead of the general elections in 2022.

The Rap Session On Youth Leadership And Political Participation held on the 20th of November, explored the role of youth leadership and political participation in Kenya’s democratic process. The session brought together national leaders from the Executive Office of the President, Youth Ministry and other functions of government along with the youth to discuss these pertinent issues. These issues are even more urgent given the upcoming general elections in 2022.

Hence, leading up to the 2022 general elections, The Youth Café and partners are collaboratively writing Regional/County Youth Manifestos that will eventually feed into a National Kenya Youth Manifesto 2022 (KYM 2022) to outline the views of the nation's youth and demand to be given equal chance and supported to actively participate in the forthcoming general elections.

This was the overarching question that formed an esteemed panel of young leaders, including The Youth Cafe’s Executive director, at the recently conducted online conference under the theme of COVID-19 & DEMOCRACY IN EAST AFRICA CONFERENCE from 19-20 November 2020. The Youth Cafe’s overarching goal around youth inclusion in politics is to increase the number of informed youth participating in the upcoming 2022 elections in Kenya, as well as increased participation of marginalized groups like women in the elections.
